Breastfeeding

I need advice on breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has benefits for you and your baby.

Babies who breastfeed are less likely to get:

Breastfeeding lowers your risk of:

  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Osteoporosis
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Obesity

The more you breastfeed, the greater the benefits. Formula milk doesn’t give the same protection from illness and won’t give you any health benefits. Giving nothing but breast milk is recommended for about the first 6 months (26 weeks) of your baby’s life.

After that, giving your baby breast milk alongside solid foods for as long as you and your baby want will help them grow and develop healthily.

It’s useful for you, your partner and other people that support you to find out as much as they can about breastfeeding, before your baby is born. This will help you to know what to expect, how to troubleshoot common issues and help those around you to provide support and encouragement.

If you’ve got a baby on the way or a child under 4, Blackpool Better Start is here for you.
