Support to stop smoking in my pregnancy

Quitting smoking is one of the best things you and your family can do to help your baby develop healthily during pregnancy and beyond.

We know it can be difficult to stop – but we also know that you want to give your baby the best possible start in life.

The risks of smoking during pregnancy are serious, from premature delivery to increased risk of

• Miscarriage • Stillbirth • Sudden infant death

No matter what stage you’re at in your pregnancy, it’s never too late to stop smoking.

Smoking is much more harmful to your baby than any stress quitting may bring.

For the best support, speak to your midwife who will refer you to the Blackpool Midwifery Stop Smoking Service, where you will receive 1:1 stop smoking support throughout your pregnancy and free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).

You can also self-refer to the Blackpool Midwifery Stop Smoking Service: bfwh.midwifery.healthtrainers@nhs.net or contact 01253 952226

Stop smoking medications

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) comes in a range of different forms, all of which contain nicotine. These products are safe and free from the dangerous chemicals found in cigarettes. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) includes products such as the skin patch, chewing gum and lozenge.

You’re more likely to successfully quit if you use more than one type of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) product. This usually means using a patch with a faster acting form like gum or lozenges.

Using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) can help manage your cigarette cravings and reduce withdrawal symptoms.

You’ll find it easier to get on with your life without constantly thinking about smoking.

These products only work if you use them properly and follow the full course. You can get advice on using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) through the range of support options above.

You can access FREE NRT when you register for Stop Smoking Support through participating GP's, Pharmacies or the Smokefree Blackpool Helpline.

Second-hand Smoke

If you’re not ready to quit, make your home smoke free to protect any others living there – both people and pets.

  • It’s illegal to smoke in a car or any other vehicle with anyone under 18.  This is to protect children and young people from the dangers of second-hand smoking.
  • Every time a child breathes in second-hand smoke, they breathe in thousands of chemicals. Second-hand smoke increases a child’s risk of illnesses ranging from common colds and ear infections through to asthma attacks, meningitis and cot death.
  • If you smoke, your children are 3 times more likely to smoke when they grow up
  • Stopping smoking is the best thing you can do to protect your loved ones from second-hand smoke

If you live in the Fylde and Wyre area please visit Quit Squad, or call 0800 328 6297.

Stopping smoking matters

NOW more than ever

If you smoke, quitting is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others, and reduce your need to use the NHS. It’s never too late to quit. From the moment you quit your body starts to repair itself.

Why stopping smoking matters now more than ever:

  1. Reduce your risk of other diseases caused by smoking such as cancer, diabetes, heart attack, emphysema, bronchitis and stroke. Quitting is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others, and reduce your need to use the NHS.

  1. Stopping smoking allows your body to repair itself – after 8 hours oxygen levels return to normal, after 2 days, your lungs start clearing out smoking debris, after 3 days breathing becomes easier and within weeks, your heart attack risk begins to drop. Watch this film which explains how quickly things happen.

  1. Protect the health of others. Exposure to secondhand smoke also increases the risk of complications from respiratory infections and, in adults, heart attacks, strokes and cancer. During this time, when we are all at home, it’s important to protect others from tobacco smoke.

If you’re trying to quit you don’t have to go it alone – contact our FREE Smokefree Blackpool helpline today for advice and support, including access to FREE nicotine replacement therapy to help you quit.

There has never been a better time to quit.
